Experiment 1: What is an alien’s
favourite chocolate?
Paper rockets ............. A Marsbar
You will need from your box:
• Large and small straws
• Paper rocket template
• Sticky tape
Things from home:
• Pens or coloured pencils
• Scissors
• Glue Stick
LET’S EXPERIMENT: https://youtu.be/jxFHY6Pkcu0
Get ready to design and launch
your own rocket!
(1) Colour and cut out your rockets (5) Place the larger
(get an adult to help straw into the
with the cutting) bottom of the
smaller straw
(2) Take the smaller straw and put a
piece of tape over the end so
no air gets out
(3) Stick the smaller straw onto the
back of your rocket, with the
taped end at the top. Paste the
second rocket opposite
(4) Now cut the smaller straw so
that it is about 2-3cms from
the bottom of your rocket (6) To launch blow into the straw 3! 2! 1! Go!
HOW DOES IT WORK?:
It’s a force that makes the straw move. A force is a push or pull on an object. Blowing air into the open end of the
straw makes it push against the closed end and send it flying into the air.
TIME TO EXPLORE - See what makes your rocket fly the highest and travel the furthest.
(1) Will a big puff or a little puff make it go further?
(2) Does it go further when you point it up or horizontal (on its side)?
(3) Can you draw and design your own rocket?
