Experiment 5:
Bottle rocket
We used the force from a fizzing reaction to launch a film canister.
Now let’s make a bottle into a rocket and launch it the same way.
You will need from your box:
• 500ml bottle
• Stopper to fit bottle
• Vitamin C tablets
• 4 sticks
• Sticky tape
• Card template
• Safety glasses
Things from home:
• Water
• Measuring cup or jug
• Scissors
LET’S GET CREATIVE:
(1) Turn your bottle upside down and
tape 4 wooden sticks, at equal distances apart,
to form the stand.
These should be approximately 5cm in length
from the bottle top. Your bottle should be able to
stand evenly. Check and adjust
(2) To make the pointed tip of your rocket,
cut out the circle from the card template.
Cut into the centre of the card down the
marked line. Push one side of the cut card inside
the other to produce a cone shape.
Place tape to secure the shape.
Now tape the cone onto the top of your bottle
(3) Cut out the rectangular shape from your
card template. This will wrap around your rocket.
Make your own colourful design on the
template with pens or stickers.
Now wrap it around your bottle and
secure with tape
(4) Cut out the 4 fins from your template and tape
these onto your bottle length-wise, down the
sides of your rocket
Your bottle rocket is ready to launch! We have used a pointed top and fins to help it be
aerodynamic and fly higher into the sky.
